The above pictures are varieties of dry stone walling - a rough and rustic product, which with the skill of a jigsaw enthusiast, and some experience can create the most beautiful walls, and features. (The white parts in the above photo are memorial stones) 

Dressed walling is another totally different type of walling, mainly used with mortar joints (like bricks) they are often coursed (all the same height), with even bed width, and random lengths. Dressed walling can be pitch faced (stands proud in the centre of each piece) or ' crop' faced which is almost flat. Fantastic for houses, boundary walls and similar projects

Ashlar walling is one of the most expensive walling products. It is normally sawn to precise measurements, and 'rubbed' to remove any production marks. This can be laid with joints as little as 3mm (but normally 5-7mm) and appears almost seamless like the major country houses of yesteryear.
